251 Benefit Street, Providence, RI, United States
Neither public nor academic nor private library, the Providence Athenaeum is a little bit of everything. An old membership library, this center is supported by members who pay dues to take out books and use the library’s materials. While the institutional structure is interesting, the building and its treasures also deserved to be marveled at. The fourth oldest library in the country and designed by Philadelphia architect William Strickland, the Athenaeum flaunts beautiful columns on the outside which tout its role as a center for learning. Inside, there are artifacts like an Egyptian cabinet and portrait of President Washington.
