Rhode Island State Cocktail

Yes, we have one. And it’s awesome.

Friends, locals, countrymen, lend me your ears and meet the Rhode Island Red.


And no, not the chicken. But yeah, it’s named after it.

Conceived in 2005 by L.A. bartender Vincenzo Marianella, this tipple should be on your radar next time you hit up a bar in RI, even if it’s not on the menu.

Wait, why did an Italian bartender in L.A. make a Rhode Island themed cocktail? Turns out Marianella worked at a West Coast bar called Providence, and thus a Rhode Island cocktail just makes SO much sense.

But enough blathering. Grab some tequila and have at it:


  • handful of raspberries
  • ice
  • 1 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 3/4 oz. Chambord (raspberry liquor)
  • 1/2 oz.  lemon juice
  • 1/4 oz. simple syrup
  • Splash of orange bitters
  • chilled ginger beer
  • 1 mint sprig

Muddle the raspberries in a cocktail shaker, then add all the ingredients except the ginger beer. Shake vigorously, pour into a Collin’s glass, fill with ginger beer and garnish with mint. TA-DA!  And make sure to toast to the fowl who inspired it all.
